Mother’s Day as a concept dates back as far as the Roman Empire, but it was solidified as a commercial holiday in the early 20th century when Anna Jarvis proposed a day to celebrate the sacrifices mothers make for their children after her mother passed in 1905. After years of campaigning, US president Woodrow Wilson made the holiday official, declaring in 1914 that every second Sunday of May would be Mother’s Day.
